Cell FORBES, COLIN United Kingdom Simon & Schuster Ltd 2002 0743231821 / 9780743231824 Paperback Good , 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Ex library book, covered in mylar wrap/ tear in wrap on front cover. Review In this thriller from the breathtakingly prolific author of The Vorpal Blade and Rhinoceros, amongst many others, we meet again the homicide detective Tweed and his colleagues, Paula Grey and Bob Newman from the SIS, who are once more investigating the brutal with laconic efficiency. In the search for a terrifying murderer, Tweed and co must travel the globe, this time in the company of Jules Beaurain, an old friend of Tweed and ex-police officer from Belgium. Forbes has been compared to John Buchan, in that his heroes journey to far countries in search of justice against enemies who threaten all that we hold dear. But his books are more violent and are most certainly of the present day. The pace is dizzying and relentless, marching us closer to a thunderous climax. There is, it must be said, an element of the formulaic in this latest volume, and a tendency for strangely simplistic over-description which reads like an author trying, unsuccessfully, to slow himself down. But this is to carp at a highly successful series (especially in libraries where Forbes is shooting up the lending charts), and Forbes's many fans will be more than happy with this fast-moving and exciting novel. No Mercy FORBES, COLIN London Pocket Books 2004 0743490010 / 9780743490016 Good , 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall ********remainder************** Forbes launches main-man and one time top Scotland Yard detective, now SIS Deputy Director, Tweed on another of his investigative adventures, with the usual whip cracking pace and staccato narrative. A man with no memory save witnessing murder, and a request from an old friend, catapult Tweed and his team into a macabre nightmare peopled by sinister characters. Instinct leads Tweed, and assistant Paula Grey, to the edge of Dartmoor, the wealthy Volkanian family, and a grizzly discovery. Armenians mingle with armaments, and Forbes' plot unfolds rapidly between locations, as the bodies stack up, and Tweed searches for the truth amongst the lies. And if a knife-wielding psychotic wasn't enough to contend with Tweed must field security forces' infighting and an assassin on his tail, as Forbes ratchets up the tension. This is a rip-roaring tale packed with action, page turning twists, sharp shooting and some nasty serrated knife work.
