1 D is for Deadbeat: A Kinsey Millhone mystery Grafton, Sue
London Pan Books 1990 0-330-31585-4 / 9780330315852 Softcover Fair
"D" is for Detective Kinsey Millhone, given $25,000 of stolen drug money by a drunkard named Daggett who then dies in a drowning. When she decides to deliver the money to Daggett's designee, a young man who was the sole survivor of an auto accident perpetrated by Daggett, Kinsey finds herself in a dilemma: too many "D's" are after the loot. There are two Mrs. Daggetts, a daughter, the drug dealers and a determined killer who soon claims a second life. At this point, Grafton's lively, well-written adventure develops a deadly flaw. Kinsey comes upon the second victim shortly after he's been shot. Though dying, he is conscious and coherent. Why, then, doesn't she ask who did it? When asked the same thing by the police, she says, "I didn't want the last minutes of his life taken up with that stuff"a humane but unlikely rejoiner from any private eye. Even so, the pleasure of this story comes through. Let's give it a "D" for Dandy.

4 Q IS FOR QUARRY Grafton, Sue
Berkley Publishing 2002 0-333-90653-5 / 9780333906538 First Edition Hardcover v good Good
The 'alphabet' series featuring female PI Kinsey Millhone is now up to Q, and this 17th novel is a winner. Some ardent fans were a bit disappointed with P is for Peril; they will be doubtless be relieved to celebrate Grafton's spectacular return to form. In the summer of '69 a young girl was murdered, her body dumped in a quarry just outside a small town in California, to be found days later by two policemen: Con Dolan and Stacey Oliphant. Despite a lengthy investigation, the girl was never identified, her killer never traced. 18 years later the two detectives want another chance to solve the mystery of this young Jane Doe before it is too late for them. Both perhaps terminally ill, Dolan and Stacey enlist the help of Kinsey Millhone, a young PI with the energy and enthusiasm to see the case through to its conclusion. Chasing through small-town America following a whole host of tenuous leads, pursuing ex-cons and grilling reluctant, respectable families, Kinsey gradually uncovers the surprising truth. This is an excellent thriller. Grafton portrays a wonderful relationship between Millhone and her older grumpy, obstinate employers, and rounds out Millhone's character more and more with each successive book. The story is well paced, the dialogue credible, the red herrings plausible and the denouement well crafted with nice twists. The murder scenario is based on an actual unsolved Jane Doe case from that year; maybe truth is stranger than fiction. It would be a fitting legacy if this book sparked leads about the actual murder.

5 R is for Ricochet Grafton, Sue
G. P. Putnam's Sons 2004 0-333-90655-1 / 9780333906552 Paperback Good
When wealthy octogenarian Nord Lafferty hires Kinsey Millhone to help his newly paroled daughter find her way back to the straight and narrow after doing time for embezzlement, the Santa Teresa P.I. has no idea what she's getting into. Reba Lafferty's ex-boss, land developer Alan Beckwith, is the man who sent her to prison--so how come she's meeting him just hours after her release, and treating Kinsey to an X-rated reunion scene played out in his parked Mercedes? And why is he also playing sex games with Reba's formerly best friend, who still works for him? A visit from an old friend from the FBI clears up the mystery--Beckwith is suspected of running a money-laundering game, and they need Reba to make their case by rolling over on him. It's not until Millhone presents Reba with photographic evidence of Beckwith's two-timing that she agrees to do what the Feds want... but she'll only do it her way, which could get a lot of people killed. Grafton fleshes out this well-crafted thriller with a romantic subplot involving a romantic triangle that features Kinsey's elderly landlord Henry, his brother, and a vivacious widow who can't seem to choose between them. It doesn't add much to the plot, but the fans of this evergreen series (who must be wondering what will happen to Millhone when Grafton gets to the end of the alphabet) probably won't mind a bit.
