Instead, she must confront her torturer in court, putting her career, her relationship and eventually her life at risk. Reminders of fictional predecessors (Bantling in Hannibal Lecter restraints, Townsend's Dirty Harriet heroics) and occasional uninspired romantic passages are Hoffman's weakness; procedural detail and methodical depiction of the horrific are her strength. She combines the gruesome precision of Patricia Cornwell, the courtroom savvy of Linda Fairstein and the Miami setting of Edna Buchanan to produce an unsettling tale that, unlike most detective fiction, is not neatly tied up at the end. Review Like so many debut thrillers, this book arrives weighed down by publisher's hype. Jilliane Hoffman is already being compared to John Grisham, Thomas Harris and Patricia Cornwell and so it is refreshing to discover that this is a tight, page turning read and won't disappoint fans of these big-name crime writers. Chloe Larson is an up-and-coming law student, with a bright future ahead of her, when she is brutally raped and left for dead by a mysterious attacker. Chloe survives but is transformed into a reserved and bitter woman with a new life working in the Miami State Attorney's Office. Twelve years on from the rape, she is working with the police in their pursuit of a serial killer nicknamed Cupid when a suspect is arrested and charged. The past comes back to haunt Chloe as she realises that this Cupid is her rapist from twelve years before, the brutal attacker who ruined her life. In a plot reminiscent of The Silence of the Lambs, Chloe's attacker is behind bars for much of the novel, but his hold over her is no less powerful for that. This is a tense, enjoyable read that will keep the reader involved to the end. Hoffman throws in several unexpected twists in the latter half of the novel, adding to the tension of what is a first rate thriller. This will surely put Jilliane Hoffman into the best seller lists and mark her as a name to watch in the future.
