"Midsummer Night's Dream" SHAKESPEARE, WILLIAM, BROOKS, HAROLD F. United Kingdom A & C Black Publishers Ltd 1979 0415026997 / 9780415026994 Paperback Good , 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Light foxing to foredge of book. From the Publisher Shakespeare's intertwined love polygons begin to get complicated from the start--Demetrius and Lysander both want Hermia but she only has eyes for Lysander. Bad news is, Hermia's father wants Demetrius for a son-in-law. On the outside is Helena, whose unreturned love burns hot for Demetrius. Hermia and Lysander plan to flee from the city under cover of darkness but are pursued by an enraged Demetrius (who is himself pursued by an enraptured Helena). In the forest, unbeknownst to the mortals, Oberon and Titania (King and Queen of the faeries) are having a spat over a servant boy. The plot twists up when Oberon's head mischief-maker, Puck, runs loose with a flower which causes people to fall in love with the first thing they see upon waking. Throw in a group of labourers preparing a play for the Duke's wedding (one of whom is given a donkey's head and Titania for a lover by Puck) and the complications become fantastically funny. Julius Caesar SHAKESPEARE, WILLIAM, SPEVACK, MARVIN United Kingdom Cambridge University Press 1988 0521294088 / 9780521294089 15 b/w illus. Spevack emphasizes the complexity of Julius Caesar's seemingly straightforward theatrical experience to focus on the inextricability of private desires and public affairs. The play's stage history supports the work's rich design, and Spevack's commentary is remarkably attentive to questions of production, precise lexical glossing, and the peculiarities of Shakespearean grammar. An extensive appendix, provides lengthy, coherent excerpts from Plutarch's Lives, Shakepeare's main source include images of Caesar from the Renaissance onwards as well as photographs of modern productions and reconstructions of likely Elizbethan stagings of Caesar's entry into Rome, his assassination, Anthony's funeral oration, and the Act 4 meeting between Brutus and Cassius. Midsummer Night's Dream SHAKESPEARE, WILLIAM, HOLLAND, PETER United Kingdom Oxford University Press 1995 0192814567 / 9780192814562 First Edition woodcuts, engravings, and halftones "A Midsummer Night's Dream" is perhaps the best-loved of Shakespeare's plays. Simple and engaging on the surface, it is none the less a highly original and sophisticated work, remarkable for both its literary and theatrical mastery. The fact that it is one of the very few of Shakespeare's plays not to draw on a narrative source suggests the degree to which it reflects his deepest imaginative concerns. In his introduction to this new edition of the text, Peter Holland traces the material out of which Shakespeare constructed his world of night and shadows, and the strange but enchanting amalgam he made of them. The Taming of the Shrew SHAKESPEARE, WILLIAM Australia, 27 October 1983 Penguin Classics 1964 0140714251 / 9780140714258 Good , 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall Comedy in five acts by William Shakespeare, produced about 1593 and printed in the Folio of 1623. Considered one of Shakespeare's bawdier works, the play describes the volatile courtship between the shrewish Katharina and the canny Petruchio, who is determined to subdue Katharina's legendary temper and win her dowry. The main story is offered as a play within a play; the frame story consists of an initial two-scene "induction": a lord offers the love story as an entertainment for tinker Christopher Sly, recovering from a drunken binge at an alehouse. Although Katharina repeatedly insults Petruchio, he woos, wins, and tames her by insisting that she is actually the soul of gentleness and patience. After their marriage, he makes her forgo food, sleep, and fancy clothing, and he outdoes her mean tongue by abusing the servants. In the final scene, Petruchio wins a bet that his wife is the most obedient after Katharina gives a speech extolling the virtues of wifely subservience. Price:
